In Rachel's words, "I was gobsmacked by the movie, The Black Panther!" The third coat in this series jumps out at you, for sure!
The colors, texture, and scenery, -they were almost sensory overload. Even before I’d left the movie theater, I knew I wanted to make a coat. I did not have a clear idea of where I wanted to begin, but when I saw the fabric that is now the coat’s main panel, I thought that would be an excellent place to start. This was supposed to be a quick, fun, and uncomplicated piece. After doing the front with Nakia, the spy, I was in trouble. For General Okoya, the leader of Tchalla's bodyguards, I wanted to create a version of the flap on their tunics. For the rest of the coat, I chose to use a variety of plain black woven and jacquard fabrics. I added machine and hand stitching, buttons, and beads for embellishment.
